Phonics

We are a “Get Reading. Keep Reading. Change Everything.” school.

We use the highly successful Read Write Inc. Phonics programme to teach our children to read, write and spell. Our children do well in the phonics screening check and by Year 2, the majority are fluent readers with the best chance of success in the KS1 tests.

Ruth Miskin Training recognise us for teaching the Read Write Inc. programmes with fidelity and passion – we know what it takes to make literacy pleasurable and rewarding for our children.

Our academies use:

Read Write Inc. Phonics for our children in Reception to Year 2 and for our children in Years 3 who need to catch up

Read Write Inc. If needed - Fresh Start for our children in Years 4 - 6 with a reading age of nine and below

Read Write Inc. Phonics is used by over a quarter of the UK’s primary schools. It is a comprehensive literacy programme, weaving decoding, comprehension, writing and spelling together seamlessly. For information and tutorials on how to support your child learning to read go to the phonics and early reading section of our website: https://www.thewhitchurchcofefederation.com/phonics-and-early-reading

Read Write Inc. Fresh Start raises attainment rapidly in reading and writing. The programme boosts children’s confidence by matching what they read with the sounds they know using specially created age-appropriate texts and anthologies. Read Write Inc. Fresh Start provides clear and cumulative writing activities to build vocabulary and punctuation.

Reading

We follow a Mastery approach to Reading through the programme Pathways to Read. Units of work are delivered using high quality texts and children in all year groups are given varied opportunities

for reading. Skills are built up through repetition within the units, and children apply these skills in the reading activities provided.

We deliver one whole class shared reading lesson per week from years 2-6 with bespoke grouped reading for every pupil at least once a week as well as individual reading.

In our shared and grouped reads, there is a clear teaching focus with the opportunity to master key reading skills in each session. There are follow on reading tasks to enable pupils to evidence the skills they have mastered independently.

Many opportunities for widening children’s vocabulary are given through the Pathways to Read approach and this builds on the extensive work we do in our academies using the Word Aware approach to provide our children with a rich and varied vocabulary.

You will find the end of year expectations for reading for each of our year groups in the documents below. For further detail on the skills that your children are learning on a termly basis, please contact your class teacher.
