Art & Design

INTENT

At The Whitchurch Church of England Federation, we want our children to love art, craft and design! We want them to have no limits to what their ambitions are and to grow up wanting to be illustrators, graphic designers, fashion designers, curators, architects or printmakers. Our Art and Design curriculum is designed to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, whilst equipping them with the knowledge and skills to be able to experiment, invent and create their own works of art.

Children have the opportunity to build in confidence and competency in drawing, painting, sculpt, etc. Children experience a cycle of reviewing, exploring and experimenting, resulting displaying their masterpieces. Throughout this cycle, oracy skills are integrated with specific key vocabulary. Children are also introduced to a wide range of artists from a range of cultures and eras and can confidently highlight the skills within their work. Through this we encourage our children to discuss their likes and dislikes through evaluating their work and work from other artists.

ART KEY KNOWLEDGE

To develop the children's understanding, they are introduced to key areas in a sequential way, with years groups building on the learning from previous years.

Each year group has progressional targets to work towards to ensure they are making progress in both their knowledge and skills. Teacher assessment and feedback is given at the end of every lesson and this assessment is then documented to inform the next block of planning.

CULTURAL CAPITAL

Cultural Capital is the collection of skills and experiences which children need to help them thrive in the wider world.

Our Art and Design provision aims to give the children a diverse set of encounters and skills which will be valuable to them long after they leave Year 6. These include:

· Meeting artists

· Visiting art museums

· Going on sculpture trails

· After-school clubs

CROSS CURRICULAR LINKS

The skills and knowledge the children use in Art and Design complement those in the rest of the curriculum. These are just some of the ways that Art and Design links to other areas of their study:

READING

Children will have the opportunity to research into chosen artists to widen their knowledge of their techniques.

HISTORY

Within each topic children are introduced to new artists, past and present. Discussions about how the time period has affected the artist work will provoke links with the History curriculum.

MATHS

Children will link their knowledge of shapes and patterns when evaluating artwork.
